After the recent ending of a relationship, Kit feels lost and uncertain about where he stands without being in a relationship. Dante, on the other hand, has been waiting for this moment for years, and now that Kit is finally single he has no intention of wasting this chance.

But even the most sincere feelings and best intentions aren't enough to guarantee happiness, and it's a long road from a bad start to a happy end.

I spent quite a bit of this book feeling really sorry for Dante. His older brother, Con, is Kit’s best friend and Dante has had a big crush for years. The timing has never worked to let Kit know who how he feels but now that Kit is free, this is it. Except, you know, it isn’t. Kit has been dumped and his sense of self has taken a big hit. So he isn’t in a good place to start anything new, and yet he decides he will. With disastrous results and hurts the person who deserves it the least.

I liked the secondary characters of Con and Maggie and how loyal Dante is to his brother. Finally standing up to the family made me so proud of Dante while at the same time, again feeling so awful for him. He had hopes for his mother being decent but… “It hit harder in that moment, the way she erased his brother, the way she refused to respect him even a little bit.” His father is an out and out bigot and it’s horrible. “My parents have never said they were proud of me at all.” In contrast, Kit’s mom is amazing and loving. She is what people think of when they think of loving mom. Dante’s youth shelter is a wonderful addition to the mix and I wish we had just a little more of Tony.

When Kit hurts Dante, he realizes what a mistake it was but how to fix it? And can it be fixed? This is an easy book to read and flows along well. It felt realistic, in that while Kit was down on himself he wasn’t able to be there for anyone else. It was a look into fixing yourself before you can work on being with others.

Bad Beginnings Anchors edition by Nicole Field Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

1) The writing style is short, to the point, and efficient, which I appreciated. Despite Dante's crush on Kit, this isn't an insta-love kind of story, another thing to value. Apart from the male leads, there are some worthwhile female side characters too. The dialogue is realistic, the characters endearing, and the romance proceeds with a good pace. This is not a particularly deep book; this is basic warm, sweet, adorable romantic fluff that I liked a lot.
I struggled to write this review because I loved the story, especially the tender chemistry between the main characters. However, there were quite a few grammatical and spelling errors, which are fairly common within Field's body of work. I've been able to overlook this in the past, because I was reading short stories and she is an engaging storyteller, but in this full length novel it eventually became too much of a distraction for me to ignore. Still, this is an excellent example of the friends-to-lovers and hurt-comfort-heal tropes I adore.
