Synopsis

Even though I don't consider myself a very spiritual person, throughout my whole life I have been very interested in the spiritual and physical aspect of Tibetan Monk's lives and the whole mystical deal surrounding them and the Tibet itself. The hope of Tibet satisfied that part of me in a special way.This is a story about spirituality, hope, love, and humanity overall. Alfaro did a great job in writing a really entertaining and exciting story while still incorporating in it some of the Buddhist philosophy relevant to the setting and epoch.
Good read for having a good time and feeding your soul at the same time.

A realistic historical fiction revolving around the life of Buddhism in Tibet during the 13th century. A well written plot filled with emotions that could touch anyone’s heart. The captivating and believable story revolving around the life of peasant family who was threatened by the assault of the Mongol army, is forced to leave their home village and set out on a journey filled with hardships and unseen consequences, and what the future holds for them.
The novel is truly a classic drama with various elements - spirituality to hope, emotion to entertainment, informative with quality, interesting along with excitement! It is short enough and easy flowing, to complete in one sitting. Excellent work by author in blending so many good elements in one book. A good read for any age group simply because is educational and talks about the culture you may not be familiar with, along with great story. A joy to read!
The hope of Tibet is a very beautiful spiritual novel that would spell bound you and yet stimulate your rationality and spirituality. The background is the treacherous Himalayan terrains that is both a protector and a destroyer. The author provides a lot of background history on Tibet and on Buddhism. The Buddhism that I have read about tells me that Siddhartha or Gautam Buddha remained silent on the topic of rebirths. Yet, it is now evident that the Buddhist monks have a deep belief in incarnation and in the process of rebirths. The whole story is based on this belief and how a Buddhist preacher got confused about the real incarnation of his guru between two young brothers. In fact, from the very start of the story there were hints and suggestions that pointed the finger at the wrong brother. So, the revelation was startling even from me and I got awed by the ending. The story has been brilliantly written and I feel blessed in reading it.
This was a great story! I was amazed at the way history came alive throughout the book. There were a couple of times I felt there was a little too much detail of Buddhism, but overall, it was interesting and well thought out. I have a much better understanding of the region and political and religious interactions now. I identified with the characters, and liked the good ones and was happy when the bad guys met their karma. However, the true gem of the story writing is in the twist at the end. Skillfully done and I didn't see it coming. My only negative criticism would be that the book is too short. If I can read it in an evening, it is a short story, not a book.
I am very impressed with the quality of this work of historical fiction. Alfaro does an exceptional job of articulating the feelings, sights and sounds of the buddhist life in 13th century Tibet. He sets the stage so well, that the mind's eye is involuntarily stimulated. You will envision the setting before you even consciously try to make it happen! I found the text easy to read and enjoyable, unlike some writings of this nature. It is quite educational, and written in a way that will keep the reader entertained. It is very descriptive, and easily brings to life the culture of that era. You will be swept into various emotions while reading of the journey of a peasant family and the hardships they faced while fleeing danger. It involves almost every feeling you can imagine.
You can read the synopsis of the book if you need more of an overview, but in short, it is definitely a good educational choice when it comes to experiencing ancient buddhism in realistic fashion.
If they think of Tibetan Buddhism at all, most Americans think of the Dalai Lama. Most don't know that there are five main schools of Tibetan Buddhism and the Dalai Lama is the temporal, though not spiritual, head of the newest of these, the Gelug School. "The Hope of Tibet" is an historical novel about a time when there was no Dalai Lama. The time was the 13th Century (the Gelug School began about 200 years later) and the Tibetan Plateau was under the control of the Mongols, and Emperor Kublai Khan. The basic story is that the Karmapa, the leader of the Kagyu School, has died and his followers are trying to find the child who is his reincarnation. Central to the plot are two young boys, brothers who become involved through different paths after they are separated following the death of their parents.
There are various subplots and several interesting characters. The author brings in historic characters like Marco Polo and Kublai Khan doing things that never actually happened, but this is supposed to be fiction and those characters fit in well and advance the story. This translation from the Spanish presents a very well written work that is entertaining, exciting, educational and certainly worth reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a few things.
